Lon Smith

Mr. Smith currently serves as the National Counsel (Special Projects) to the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service.  As the National Counsel, Mr. Smith provides guidance to the Chief Counsel in both technical and managerial matters, and is responsible for certain of the Office’s programs, such as those addressing the taxation of hedge funds and private equity funds.  He has also provided guidance to the Special Counsel (Legislation), as well as the Professors-in-Residence, and has worked with foreign taxing authorities in understanding the IRS’s role in the US tax system.

Mr. Smith previously served as Branch Chief of the tax-exempt bond branch and, after promotion to the Senior Executive Service, as the Associate Chief Counsel (Financial Institutions & Products).  He received his B.A. degree from the University of Rochester, his J.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and his LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University.
